Color Palette

Hi Gang!

Do you love bold colors? Are you afraid to venture beyond neutrals? Maybe you just don’t trust your own design sensibility? You may be interested to know that half of the DIYers surveyed (56 percent) by KILZ® brand pay attention to color trends, and 91 percent of those people are satisfied with the popular color palettes of the moment.

Indeed, it’s easy to open a magazine and find popular colors and furniture designs already picked out for you - but decorating does not have to follow the trends. While these trends are a great way to inspire you and get your creative juices flowing, don’t feel limited to imitate exactly what you see! Your personal preferences should play a big role in your decisions, since you’re the one who will be living with those colors. Try to find a balance between the trends you spot when flipping through magazines and your personal style and color preferences. If you stick to what you love, the process will feel a lot less risky and you will be happier with the end results.

The best choice for you should be a result of both research and instinct. What is your favorite color scheme?

Bye for now!
Lisa

Hi gang!

Recently, reader Michelle sent me this question about whether or not her son should pursue a degree in interior design. It’s a heady issue, and as we all know, every creative field can be competitive – but my view is, if you love something, you should pursue it!

Check out Michelle’s question and my answer below:

“Lisa, I was wondering if you could help me out. I went to school for Interior Design and Architecture. My stepson, Nic, is now 15. He is looking to go to school for the same career. He is looking into colleges and the cost for 4 years will be in the 150K range. This scares me! Nic is very talented and loves everything about design. I am trying to let him know how competitive this field is, and I’m worried that he will carry a large school loan that his starting salary likely will not compensate for. I was wondering if you could advise him as to how hard this career is, and how you got to where you are in your career? Thank you!”

Michelle, I am a practical person first, but I have always gone by the philosophy that if you do what you love, the money will follow. Nothing trumps passion and enthusiasm! If you have a passion for your work and your heart is in it, then you will be a success and love what you are doing. If your son has a passion for design, I would encourage him. I must tell you that my career in design & architecture began with my college internship selling toilets and plumbing. Yes - toilets! I was selling them to movie stars and rich people...but it wasn't glamorous. It did, however, lead me to the next step, and then the next. If I hadn't sold toilets and plumbing - and loved it and learned...I wouldn't be on television today!

PS – Do any of you question whether you should encourage your kids to pursue creative fields? What has your personal experience been?
