Romantic Homes with Lisa LaPorta

Hey Gang!

Today, I want to share an interview I did last July with Romantic Homes magazine. It was a casual, fun interview all about my summer projects and some of my personal favorite pieces in my own home. Here are a few excerpts:

What's my current inspiration?
Jewelry from India! Especially jewelry mounted in silver.

The last thing I bought for my home?
I have bowls of quartz all over my home, because I love that they are said to have energy, plus they sparkle and shine around the house… So I bought more crystals!

Best tricks when entertaining?
Display the food beautifully, use elaborate platters and pastry stands to decorate the party area. Also, try using short glass flower vases to serve food instead of typical bowls.

Favorite new color?
Greige (gray-beige). It's the perfect blend of warm and cool!

Best place to unwind?
At home, watching an episode of "Law & Order" in my pajamas with my honey and puppy, Pico.

***

What are your favorite entertaining tricks for the holidays? Share them in the comments below!

Ciao!
Lisa

Watch my segment on LXTV!

Lisa LXTV

Hi gang!

I recently had a great time filming a segment about house jewelry for LXTV! The segment aired over the weekend, and now you can watch it online here! House jewelry is anything from metal objects like light fixtures and cabinet handles to colorful accessories like pillows and candles. These details can transform a room, just like a beautiful necklace can complete an ensemble.

I can't wait to hear what you think of the segment. And if you want to see more of this gorgeous house, you can view the real estate listing here.

Have a great week!

LXTV Open House

Hi gang!

I had a blast doing a segment about house jewelry for NBC LX-TV Open House. The segment will air this weekend (times below) - we shot it at a house my friend Evan Gaskin just completed in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He is a high-end builder who usually ends up selling his homes to movie stars!

There were endless examples of great house jewelry in Evan's latest house, because he builds dreamhouses in the $5-10 million price range - so we got a sneak peak at one that is about to go on the real estate market. We can dream looking at this house...but there are great design details and take away tips that we can all use in our own homes.

The segment airs this weekend! Here are the times that it will air in the following cities:

NBC Los Angeles (Channel 4)
Saturday, 2/5/11 @ 7:00 PM
Sunday, 2/6/11 @ 4 PM

NBC Chicago (WMAQ) - Sundays at 10:30 am
NBC Bay Area (KNTV) - Sundays at 3:00 pm
NBC San Diego (KNSD) - Saturdays at 4:30 pm and Sundays at 3:30pm & 6:30 pm
NBC Dallas/Fort Worth (KXAS) - Sundays at 11 am
NBC Washington (WRC) - Sundays at 5:30 am
NBC Miami (WTVJ) - Sundays at 7 am
NBC Connecticut (WVIT) - Sundays at 6:00 am

I hope you enjoy the segment, and I can't wait to hear what you think!

Lisa in Chair

Happy Friday, everybody!

I have to tell you, I am obsessed with wing chairs at the moment! In my own dining room every chair at the table is an oversized chocolate leather wing chair with nail-heads. On the “Rachael Ray Show” Apartment Makeover, white leather wing chairs from Home Decorators were the cornerstone of my living room design.

Wing chair

Coincidentally, we had a little conflict behind the scenes, because John Gidding had chosen the same white leather wing chairs for his living room design! He was kind enough - a total sweetheart - to let me win this one and use these gorgeous chairs in the apartment I designed.

It is amazing how a hip, modern fabric or leather with rock and roll nail-head studs can make a traditional piece like a wing chair look so fresh and new!

Have you taken any vintage or traditional furniture and made it edgy and fresh with a new fabric or choice of color?

Have a great weekend!
Lisa

Hi everyone!

Here’s a little inside peek into this week’s Rachael Ray episode.

One of the hardest parts about designing an apartment for the “Rachael Ray Show” was that I had to design it ahead of time for a fictitious client. The only guideline that I was given was that my apartment had to accommodate a single parent with a child or a couple with a child.

I work best as designer when I can channel my client's vision, so this was a challenge! As a designer, I never design for my own taste. And to be completely honest my taste changes daily!
If I knew what I wanted, my living room would have furniture in it. And it doesn't. It's empty! As they say, the cobbler's shoes have holes...

The only other guideline from the “Rachael Ray Show” was our budget of $10,000 at Home Decorators - my new fave catalog and website - and $2500 from Lowe's. This seemed like a dream budget to work with compared to the $2000 budget I had on close to 150 episodes of “Designed to Sell”.

I hope you like what I came up with! Did any part of the design or furnishings stand out to you?

Ciao!
Lisa
